3 Scientific Foundations and Model Descriptions The two models chosen for detailed study in this chapter are Fitts’ law and Guiard’s model of bimanual skill. The proposition in this chapter is that the same perceptual mechanisms that enable us to perceive the world also enable us to perceive information patterns in computer displays. The approach can be called information psychophysics. Where classical psychophysics is concerned with understanding how we see light, color, and simple patterns, information psychophysics is concerned with how we can see simple information patterns (such as paths in graphs or groups of symbols) when these patterns are expressed through light, color, and simple patterns.
